Somatic Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

Somatic Treatment is a body-centered therapy that focuses on the connection between the mind and body. It works by helping individuals become more aware of their physical sensations, emotions, and bodily responses to stress or trauma. The therapy involves using mindfulness, breathwork, and other techniques to release tension and trauma stored in the body, promoting healing and emotional well-being.

Somatic Treatment can benefit anyone dealing with stress, anxiety, trauma, or physical symptoms that may be related to emotional distress. It is particularly helpful for people who feel disconnected from their bodies or struggle with chronic tension, trauma, or conditions like PTSD. This therapy is also effective for those seeking a holistic approach to mental and physical healing.

The benefits of Somatic Treatment include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased body awareness and emotional regulation
  • Healing from trauma and emotional pain
  • Improved physical well-being and reduction in chronic tension
  • Enhanced ability to cope with life’s challenges by connecting with the body’s natural healing abilities

Somatic Treatment differs from traditional talk therapy by focusing on the body’s role in emotional healing. While other therapies may emphasize thoughts and emotions, Somatic Therapy encourages clients to pay attention to their physical sensations and how their body holds stress or trauma. This body-centered approach allows for a deeper healing process that engages both mind and body.

Trauma often gets stored in the body, manifesting as physical tension, chronic pain, or disconnection from bodily sensations. Somatic Treatment helps individuals access these stored emotions and physical responses, allowing them to process and release the trauma. By focusing on body awareness, clients can safely explore traumatic experiences and gradually heal both emotionally and physically.

For individuals with PTSD, Somatic Treatment helps by addressing the physical symptoms often associated with trauma, such as hypervigilance, muscle tension, and dissociation. Through body-centered techniques like breathwork, grounding, and mindful movement, Somatic Therapy helps clients regulate their nervous system, reducing symptoms of PTSD and promoting a sense of safety in the body.

Somatic EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) Therapy combines traditional EMDR techniques, which are used to process traumatic memories, with somatic (body-based) awareness. This approach helps clients not only process traumatic memories but also address the physical sensations associated with those memories. By engaging both the mind and body, Somatic EMDR facilitates a more integrated healing experience for trauma recovery.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that views the mind as made up of different “parts” or subpersonalities, each with its own thoughts and feelings. The goal of IFS is to help individuals connect with their core “Self” and foster harmony among their parts. When combined with somatic techniques, IFS Therapy allows clients to explore their internal parts while also engaging with the physical sensations connected to those parts, leading to a deeper sense of healing and self-awareness.
